On Sunday July 29th, the air hanging above the crowd at the Molson Amphitheatre was dense with smoke as fans eagerly awaited performances from Chiddy Bang, Chevy Woods, Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa for the Toronto stop of the Under The Influence of Music tour. A crowd of almost 15,000 piled into their seats for the four-hour affair, and the thick smoke in the air was pierced by the booming bass and chromatic lightshow that accompanied each rapper’s performance.
Kendrick Lamar rocked the crowd with a short set that saw him work through a handful of Section 80 hits before blessing the crowd with a live rendition of his new single, Swimming Pools to the excited screams of thousands. Mac Miller followed with his own highly-energetic performance, bouncing across the length of the stage and keeping the crowd in the palm of his hands as he worked through his catalog of party-raps.
But it was Wiz Khalifa who stole the show with a live performance that justified the need for this event to be held at a stadium. With a live band backing him, the Captain of the Taylor Gang put on an hour-long spectacle that had him singing, dancing, and of course rapping the songs that have brought him his well-deserved fame.
As the final note played Wiz offstage and the smoke started to clear, the most memorable image from the Under The Influence tour may have been the smile on the faces of everyone in attendance.
